Not your standard BBQ charcoal briquettes, this charcoal is made from local forest biomass and is meant to be added into compost or livestock bedding to become transformed into biochar, the amazing soil amendment that every garden bed should have in it.
Burning biomass with low oxygen (pyrolysis) leaves behind just the carbon and creates a microscopic environment with a huge surface area and numerous pores, providing an ideal environment for microbes to inhabit and nutrient retention, fostering healthier plant growth and overall soil ecosystem resilience.
Biochar needs to be activated before incorporating into the soil. To activate:
- Mix with compost and let it sit for two weeks or
- Mix with compost tea or organic liquid fertilizer and let sit for 24 hrs
- Add into livestock bedding and then compost the manure/bedding as usual
